THE PENSIVE IMAGE OF SALOME, AS SHE ADMIRES THE DECAPITATED HEAD OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTISTE, HER UNREQUITED LOVE....
FROM THE OSCAR WILDE ILLUSTRATED PLAY, C 1894
"I have one aim — the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing." Quote from the Artist about himself.... Born in Brighton in 1872, the unique talent of Aubrey Beardsley speaks for itself. Beardsley was an influential artist, illustrator, caricaturist, and author, whose work reflected the decadence of his Era.

His strong sense of aesthetics aligned him with the Yellow Book magazine coterie of artists and writers, and he produced many illustrations for this influential magazine. Aubrey's drawings evoke the pleasures of decadence and symbolism.

His artistic endeavours, done mostly in ink, are easily recognised. Featuring large dark areas contrasted with large blank ones, and areas of fine detail contrasted with areas with none at all, are irreverent and very Japanese in influence. Or are they ?
Renowned for his dark and perverse images of the grotesque and the erotic, he frequently focused his imagination onto historic and mythological themes. Having created illustrations of both Lysistrata and Salomé, Beardsley had a timeless insight in to both history and mythology. His strong sense of aesthetics dared to capture their splendour with both delight and dismay.

Beardsley was a close friend of Oscar Wilde and illustrated his play Salomé in 1893 for its' French release, which went on to be released in London in 1894. He produced extensive illustrations for books, most notably the deluxe edition of Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur. He also worked for magazines like The Savoy and The Studio. Beardsley also wrote Under the Hill, an unfinished erotic tale based loosely on the Tutonic legend of Tannhäuser.

His short life on Earth ended when he died of tuberculosis in Menton, France at the age of 25 on March 16, 1898.
